"HOKULI'A - SIMPLY THE BEST OF HAWAI'I "
Lyle Anderson, who developed the extremely exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland and Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Arizona, now brings you Hokuli'a.
Hokuli'a spans three spectacular miles along the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The goal is to make Hokuli'a the finest private oceanside community in the world. Its setting is graced with a remarkable micro-climate that provides ideal year-round living conditions free of the strong winds that sometime affect golf in many places in Hawaii.
The golf course, personally designed by Jack Nicklaus, rises from sea level to approximately 400 feet, with every hole framed by a dramatic ocean view. The fishing and diving waters off Hokuli'a are considered among the best in Hawaii and members are able to take advantage of these wonderful activities aboard the club's two sport-fishing boats, the Hokuli'a I and the Captain Jack.
Hokuli`a's promise is to deliver the best of Hawaii for all of its members. It's a promise that requires attention to detail, which is born out in the mindful—but not restrictive—design guidelines for Hokuli'a home sites.
Because each site across the sloping, 1,550-acre Kona Coast retreat possesses its own physical characteristics, solutions for situating a house can differ in each case. But what unifies these remarkable properties is the goal that each house is provided a view to the Pacific Ocean. This unifying goal is reflected in the design requirement that roof planes are determined for each home site. The other primary guideline limits the light reflective value of a house, so that exterior colors of all Hokuli'a homes appeal to the landscape.
Owners and the architects can work with our Design Review Committee to make the most of their one-of-a-kind setting, starting with a pre-design meeting that addresses the qualities of each home site. “That way when the architect begins the design process, he knows exactly what Hokuli'a's looking for,” said Jeff McBeth, chairman of the Hokuli'a Design Review Committee.
Emerging from a breathtaking backdrop and the vision of the foremost name in golf design, Hokuli'a aspired from the beginning to take its place among the world's finest golf courses.
The Jack Nicklaus touch at Hokuli'a is evident in the superb shot values. “You're going to play every club in your golf bag,” said Erik Kutz, Hokuli`a's Head Golf Professional. The course has attracted the interest of other golf luminaries. PGA champion Hale Irwin is a touring pro and Hokuli'a member.
The texture of the course accommodates players of varying skill levels. The par-72 course, which opened in 2002, stretches 7,337 yards from the Nicklaus tees, and compacts to a friendlier 5,314 yards from the front tees. Fairways are park-like, but top players will be tested. From the back tees holes become longer, views to the green narrow, and angles to the pins are tougher.
It's a rare find in Hawaiian golf—one of a select few private, oceanside courses on the Island of Hawaii. In fact, five holes play next to the ocean. Golfers here also enjoy both balmy temperatures year-round and mild Kona breezes that typically top out at 5 miles per hour. And the greens feature Champion Bermuda, a grainless grass that “roll very true,” Kutz said.
For more than 25 years Lyle Anderson's companies have turned real estate into regal private communities, textured with resort-like amenities for its members. Hokuli'a takes a special pride in presenting a community that offers the qualities of a neighborhood. And with its location just steps away from the town of Kailua-Kona, Hokuli'a fits comfortably within the greater Kona community.
Hokuli`a's members enjoy the benefits of the sheltered Kona Coast, a sunny micro-climate which is protected from the gusty winds and rains that sometimes roil the northern and eastern shores along the Island of Hawaii. Hokuli`a's Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course features the inimitable designs of the golfing legend—an oceanside experience promising both convenient access and breathtaking views.
Club-owned boats are minutes away and allow for fishing, diving and cruising the cobalt waters. Planned amenities will include a golf clubhouse, club swimming and dining, spa facilities, dining and tennis courts and a recreational park.
Hawaiians call it ho `onanea, the ability to relax and pass time with ease and pleasure. It's a calling at Hokuli'a. From its balmy weather conditions to the design of the open-air hales to the vistas that permeate the seaside setting, Hokuli'a practically insists upon repose.
Hokuli'a, featuring a subtle distribution of amenities throughout the community, also invites members to celebrate life's achievements. It's a place for memorable gatherings, to mark family milestones, or to revel in the simple joys of island solitude. Hokuli`a's world-class amenities are fittingly designed by renowned Hawaiian architect Francis Oda, who has coined the term “kama'aina architecture”, meaning architecture of the children of the land. These amenities also support the active, healthy lifestyle that Hawaii is known for. Pursue your passion, be it golf, water sports, tennis or hiking.
Hokuli'a also delivers on additional Lyle Anderson trademarks. Organization. Quality. Elegance with simplicity. Find it all at Hokuli'a, where you can define your own form of ho `onanea. Support the active, healthy lifestyle that Hawaii is known for. Pursue your passion, be it golf, water sports, tennis or hiking.
Aloha, as with many Hawaiian words, carries a variety of meanings. In its broadest use, it's a greeting that means hello or goodbye. But it's also a spoken smile whenever it's heard.
That smile spreads across Hawaiian culture, reflecting a people and place that share the same qualities: graceful, venerable, and warm.
It's a smile you'll feel at Hokuli'a, where Hawaiian tradition is revered in the way Hokuli'a honor and preserve historic archeology on this treasured site, and even with the naming of the property itself. In choosing the name, Hokuli'a founder Lyle Anderson honored Hawaiian tradition when he sought the blessing of kupuna, or elders.
Traditional Hawaiian culture also extols lokahi, or the concept that all things are connected. And maintaining a connection with land and ohana, or family, is the foundation for spiritual health.
Hokuli'a is a place for families to connect. A place to celebrate the gift of one of the most spectacular preserves in the Hawaiian islands.
